Most screens are built to keep a child on them. One more video, one more level, one more scroll. The design goal is more time, and it works.
The best screen time has the opposite goal. It is built to end, and to hand a child something to carry off the screen. A question. A noticing. A reason to turn to the person next to them.
Watching is not the point. Wondering is.
A child can watch hours of content labeled good for them and stay completely passive, soaking it in and forgetting it by dinner. The watching is not where the learning happens. The wondering is, and the talking that follows it.
So the question for any screen is simple: when it ends, does the child have something to do, ask, or say? Or does it just cue up the next thing?
Why wordless films start the talk
A wordless film of a real person is built to start the conversation rather than end it. There is no narration telling a child what to think, so the noticing is theirs. They see a real person in a real day, and the questions come on their own. Who is that. Where are they. Why are they doing that.
Then the screen turns off, and the actual moment arrives: a grownup or a class wondering out loud together. The film was just the doorway. The conversation is the room.
A good film does not hold a child's attention. It hands it to the person beside them.
How to make it happen
It takes almost nothing. Watch a few minutes together. Point at what you see and ask what they wonder. Resist the urge to explain. When you want to go deeper, read the person's own story aloud and keep wondering. Let it spill into the car ride and the dinner table.
That is the whole practice. Small, shared, and finite. A few real minutes that point a child back toward the people around them.
