what real-world math is
Most math instruction starts with a worksheet. The numbers come first, then a thin context gets bolted on so the work feels less abstract. "Two trains leave a station." "Sally has 12 apples." The story is filler. The numbers do not belong to anyone.
Real-world math reverses the order. It starts with a real person doing real work in a real place, and the math is what falls out of that person's life when you look closely. Norma counts bananas before market. Sastha calculates rooftop angles for solar panels. Manjula tracks water purification across her community. These are not word problems. These are jobs. The math is the actual math those people use every day.
Real-world math is not a teaching trick. It is what math is, before school turns it into a worksheet.

A 4th grader does the arithmetic. A 9th grader optimizes the schedule. Same village. Same problem. Different math.
